Star of the Week

Each week a student is selected to be our Star of the Week.  We all enjoying hear about this student's interests hobbies and achievements, as they present their special bulletin board on Friday afternoon.  A notice will be sent home on the Friday that your child is selected.  Mom and/or Dad are welcome to come in Monday morning to help your child set up the bulletin board and again on Friday afternoon to watch your child present.

OIL DRUM ART

Students painted recycled oil drums with environmental themes.  Thank you to local artist Susan Rosano for coming in and teaching us!  Watch for the finished drums around Unquowa!

Mother Earth

Did you know that Amber is fossilized tree sap?  Did you know that amethyst that is dark in color means that it cooled slowly inside of air pockets in the Earth?  We learned the answers to these and much more recently at Mother Earth.  We were able to learn about many different minerals from the around the world.  Later students went into the mine to dig for their own minerals to take home.

Special Visitors

Enhancing our study of birds in science, we were lucky enough to spend some time with "Jack  and Jill", Alex's 2 turtle doves recently.  We were amazed at how docile these birds were.  Many students were able to hold and pet them.  Ms. Lauer even joined in on the fun!

SPORT HILL FARM

We had a wonderful time at Sport Hill Farm in Easton on Monday September 29!  The rain held out and we were able to tour the farm, pick lettuce and beets.  Mrs. Popp taught us about eating seasonally.  We learned that lettuce does not like the warm weather of summer and is actually in season in the fall.  We also learned broccoli and cauliflower are very hearty and can withstand cold weather.  We saw white eggplant and Brussels sprouts growing, too.  We brought fresh eggs, lettuce, beets and swiss chard back to Unquowa and on Wednesday (10/1) Chef Dan helped us to prepare these for lunch.  Thank you to all the chaperones who helped make this field experience a terrific success!
