BOOK CLUBS...a book's even better when you share it with a friend!
Third graders are enjoying being part of a book club as we explore the works of Beverly Cleary. Each student has a job to do in the group. Students may be the "discussion director" or "passage picker" on one day and the "word finder" or "illustrator" on another! Students have selected which titles to read and they include; Ribsy, Henry Huggins, Ramona the Pest and Henry and Ribsy.
We shared our stories with second grade and Ms. Leavy!
Language Arts
Book Reports...The next book report is due on January 31. This is based on the book you are reading at home each night during the 20 minutes of required reading. The book selection is your choice and the report form will be sent home with instructions. Enjoy a good book...
MATH...
MULTIPLICATION HAS BEGUN...
In math, we are starting a unit on multiplication. Multiplication is introduced as repeated addition and a quicker way to add. Students are learning how to represent a multiplication problem in an array and to also use multiplication in stories. To start, we will focus mastering the concept of multiplication and then we will move into basic facts staring with 0,1,2, and 5's. Students will learn many strategies to recall facts. Ask them to share some with you!
We will continue to have weekly "Mad Minutes" (addition, subtraction AND multiplication), so keep practicing those facts at home! The children are very excited to see their scores increase each week.
SCIENCE!
Humus, Loam, Topsoil, Bedrock...Third graders are busy learning what soil really is and ways to conserve it. We have discovered that it takes 500-1,000 years to create soil, so we need to be careful of what we do to it.
